Ecosystem & Shrimps

We've done extensive research to create optimal conditions for your aquarium to be self sustaining. The ecosystem provides food and oxygen while effectively cleansing carbon dioxide. A robust colony of beneficial bacteria breaks down toxins and waste matter, maintaining healthy water parameters. For more details, refer to our Learn section.

Our aquariums are open systems, meaning they are not completely enclosed or sealed airtight. This allows for air exchange and the feeding of vitamin supplements, promoting the health and immunity of the shrimps. It also enables the addition of shrimp and/or snail. In contrast, closed systems, which are entirely sealed, do not allow for air exchange, leading to unhealthy environment over time. Moreover, closed systems do not permit any adjustment to water conditions if the ecosystem deteriorates. As passionate shrimp enthusiasts, we strongly advise against such units.

Our ecosystems are designed to last for years, with shrimps typically living up to 10 years, each varying individually.

Yes, there is a possibility of reproduction, like all other animals, though it is considered rare. It may take months or even years before you see a berried (pregnant) shrimp or sightings of baby shrimps. Customers who reported seeing babies often start with more than 10 shrimps. Breeding success requires patience, luck, and a sufficient number of shrimps to begin with.

It's not possible to differentiate gender with the naked eye.

They exist in varying shades of red naturally.

While the shrimps are generally hardy and low maintenance pets, they are still living beings and can die. Beyond natural causes, common reasons for shrimp deaths due to human error include overfeeding, introducing foreign objects into the ecosystem, shifts in water parameters, and unintentional exposure to direct or close light source, which can cause heat retention unnecessarily.

There is no need to remove it. Other shrimps will feed on the carcass for nutrients, and the excess waste will be broken down by beneficial bacteria, maintaining equilibrium in the ecosystem.

Optimal Placement and Conditions

You can put your aquarium wherever you like — TV consoles, shelves, working desks, and even bathrooms are popular choices — as long as it is indoors.

Avoid placing your aquarium too close to windows or near natural or artificial light sources that could cause heat retention. Additionally, keep it away from areas with excessive tremors or where it might be knocked over by kids, pets, or careless adults.

Our ecosystem thrives in typical Singapore indoor temperatures, whether the room is air-conditioned or not. Rooms with on/off air conditioning throughout the day and night are perfectly fine.

Yes, that’s fine! Many customers have their aquariums set up on their work desks. Just ensure your aquarium isn’t placed near windows or close to light sources that could cause unnecessary heat retention.

Care & Maintenance

Shrimps primarily feed on the naturally occurring algae within the ecosystem as their main diet. To enhance their health and immunity, you can supplement their diet with ExciteDime vitamin pellets.

Each aquarium comes with a starter pack of EdenDew solution and ExciteDime pellets. You can replenish your supplies via online order when finished.

EdenDew is a top-up solution designed to maintain healthy water parameters in your ecosystem.

These are vitamin pellets to supplement your shrimps’ diet. It provides the overall balanced nutrition for your shrimps that will improve their health, immunity and colouration.

24 months from month of purchase. For optimal freshness, store them in a cool, dry, and dark area.

For ExciteDime, make sure your hands are completely dry before feeding in order not to contaminate the remaining pellets in the container.

This is a delicately balanced ecosystem to achieve self sustainability. We do not recommend introduction of the following, as they may harm or kill the shrimps:

  • No foreign elements or decorations - these may contain incompatible materials or leak toxins and chemicals into the ecosystem.
  • No other shrimp species.
  • No tap water - tap water contains minerals and chemicals that are unsuitable for this set up.

Congratulations on the expansion of your shrimp family! Overcrowding won’t be an immediate concern, as baby shrimps have minimal bioload impact on the ecosystem. Since each customer’s situation is unique, we recommend reaching out to us for personalised advice and options on managing the next phase of your pet shrimp journey.
